Enchanted Highway
Some more sights on our CANDIS ride in ND. 32 miles of our route on the 5th day was on the Enchanted Highway as it is called. There are 7 extremely large metal sculptures, each about 3 or 4 miles apart. I was reading on the internet they are listed in the Guiness World Book of records as the largest scrap iron sculptures in the world. The 7 sculptures all have themes - Tin Family, Teddy Rides Again, Pheasants on the Prairie, Fisherman's Dream, Grasshoppers in the Field, Deer Crossing, and Geese in Flight. Just how big are they? Well in the Tin Family above the man is 45 feet tall. They used 3,000 gallons of paint on the Pheasants on the Prairie. One of the deer on Deer Crossing is 60 feet long and 75 feet high. The Geese in Flight weighs 79 tons and the biggest goose has a 30 foot wing span. Neat to see. Each one had a kiosk and parking area. At one of the sculptures the artist's brother was there chatting with us. He helps his brother construct them. They had very detail blue prints before they would start a sculpture. But the brother said sometimes they forgot about the transportation issues to get to a site. The Deer Crossing was so large they could not get it through the town. Had to take it back cut it into sections and then rebuild when they got it to the site.
North Dakota must be into big sculptures - these sculptures, the big cow, and in James Town they have a big buffalo. Maybe it is there answer to trees.
