Planes of another era

On Friday Sheila and Diane, a friend of hers, decided to go to a big market shopping.
I took Diane's husband out to a small airfield I knew about to see old planes. A great day - it's a man thing. I don't know why they don't advertise this place much as it is a museum. There are two big hangers where they are working on as well as displaying WW II planes and older jets. Out on the tarmac they had a B 17 that they had just changed the engine on. They were fueling it up for a short demonstration hop the next day. The B17 was sent to the Pacific, but the war ended before it could see action. All the while they were working on it they let us climb through it. Most of the men are retired plane mechanics who spend there Winter here. The planes are brought here for work in the Winter time. Some are just on display. They even said if I was down here and wanted to Vol. to work on planes I could. They would just let me take out or put in things like rivets. Nothing that would affect the air worthiness of the plane. Basically a gofer. Sounded great to me.
The P51 was in action during WW II and had 27 kills. I noticed one of the pilots died in 1944 so suspect he fought one dog fight too many. It has been all updated and a local guy owns and flies it once in a while, or so they said.
